About the Brow Lift Procedure

The eyebrows and forehead are one of the defining features on a person’s face. Over time, the brow line can begin to droop down causing us to look noticeably older and more tired. A brow lift is a procedure performed by board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. James Goggin that removes excess skin and tightens the tissues to restore a rejuvenated appearance of the forehead, brow, and eyelid areas.

The Benefits of Brow Lift Surgery

Depending on your individual goals and starting point, Dr. Goggin will assess your concerns and examine your forehead, hair line, eyebrows, eyelids, and face. This procedure can:

  • Remove Forehead Wrinkles: Horizontal creases across the forehead are reduced to reveal smooth, youthful skin above the eyebrows.
  • Correct Frown Lines: Vertical furrows between the brows, known as “frown lines” or the “elevens” are improved to help express a more cheerful facial appearance.
  • Rejuvenate Your Eyes: Drooping brows that hang over the eyes can make you appear tired or angry. With a brow lift, you can project a more alert and friendly appearance.
  • Improve Line of Sight: Excess skin and fatty tissue from the eyebrows can be lifted to correct impaired vision from the low brow.

Types of Brow Lift

The art of brow lift has evolved significantly over time. Dr. Goggin has mastered some of the newer techniques so that he can offer more effective and less invasive surgeries:

Endoscopic Brow Lift

Endoscopic brow lift, also known as short scar brow lift, uses a tool called an endoscope (that features a miniature camera) so that Dr. Goggin can see beneath the skin without having to make a larger incision or remove excess skin.

Because it is a less invasive procedure with a shorter recovery, it is the preferred method for many patients, currently.

Coronal Brow Lift

This classic “traditional” approach to brow lift is the most appropriate for tackling more advanced signs of aging. Here, Dr. Goggin makes longer incisions along the hairline (where scarring is easily hidden) so that he can reposition muscle and tissue while also removing loose skin.

Temporal Brow Lift

A temporal (lateral) brow lift is the least invasive option for brow lift. Rather than making improvements to a larger section of the forehead, Dr. Goggin limits his attention to the outer portion where the earliest signs of aging are most likely to appear. Slight adjustments can help to restore a youthful arch to the eyebrows and minimize moderate wrinkles.

Brow Lift Results

The duration of results differs from patient to patient, depending mainly on the type of technique that Dr. Goggin uses. Most patients can expect to enjoy their results for five to 10 years. To extend these results, take care of your skin by using moisturizer and protecting it from sun exposure.

How do I determine which brow lift technique is right for me?

During your consultation, you will meet with Dr. Goggin for an evaluation and to discuss your aesthetic goals. The amount of correction you require and a variety of other factors will be taken into consideration to help determine the right technique for your individual needs.

What procedures are commonly combined with brow lift surgery?

Facelift surgery, blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery), facial fat grafting, and laser/chemical peels are often combined with brow lift surgery to achieve complete facial rejuvenation.

How do I know if I need an eyelid lift (blepharoplasty) combined with my brow lift to rejuvenate my eyes?

Sagging brows as well as excess tissue in the eyelids can contribute to vision impairment and drooping in the upper eyelids. To determine if a brow lift alone will correct this condition, place your fingers just above your eyebrows and lift them into a more favorable position. If most of the skin in the upper eyelid is improved, a brow lift is most likely right for you. If excess tissue in the eyelid remains, eyelid surgery may also be needed to rejuvenate the eyes. Lower eyelid surgery can also be performed to remove excess skin and bags below the eyes.

What is the time frame for recovery after a brow lift?

You will be advised to sleep with your back and head elevated for the first week after the procedure, and mild activities such as walking can be performed during this time. Most patients can return to work one week after surgery, but strenuous activities and heavy lifting must be avoided for at least a few weeks. Your surgeon will give you specific instructions to follow your procedure to ensure the safest and most effective recovery.

At what age do people have brow lift?

Dr. Goggin does not have a set age range for brow lift. Because the forehead is one of the first areas on the face to show signs of aging, sometimes patients seek treatment earlier than they might for other forms of facial enhancement. The “right” time to seek brow lift is any point at which you develop visible signs of aging on your brow and wish to make improvements.

Can I combine brow lift with other plastic surgery procedures?

Dr. Goggin frequently combines brow lift with other procedures. In fact, many patients pair brow lift with facelift/neck lift so they can simultaneously rejuvenate the top and bottom areas of their face. By having both surgeries performed on the same day, you can overlap the recovery periods and save on some facility/anesthesia costs.

How much does brow lift cost?

Since each brow lift is customized to the needs and requests of the patient, the price is largely dependent on the techniques you and Dr. Goggin agree will best achieve your goals. During a consultation, Dr. Goggin can devise a surgical plan and provide a quote. Because brow lift is an elective procedure, it is not covered by insurance, but financing options are available at Westside Plastic Surgery.

Are there non-surgical alternatives to brow lift?

Some of the skin-smoothing effects of brow lift can be mimicked with injectable treatments like BOTOX or Dysport. However, now that endoscopic and temporal brow lift procedures are so famously minimally invasive, patients who may otherwise not be interested in cosmetic surgical procedures find brow lift to be a suitable compromise. Not only are the results more transformative, but brow lift also avoids the need for injections a few times per year to maintain the results.
